I believe that skiing is as close as you can get to the perfect Christmas, and have given you five reasons why a Christmas skiing holiday should be added to your bucket list.
A white Christmas is on every child’s wish list, but how often do those fairy-tales come true? Spend Christmas in St Anton and you’re guaranteed the white stuff.
The possibility of waking up to the magical flurry of snowflakes falling outside your window isn’t a pipe-dream and you are guaranteed snow on the mountain, due to St Anton’s has excellent snow-making infrastructure.
There is something amazing about taking on the gondola and hitting a few runs on Christmas morning. When you take a moment to look around you will realise that it’s Christmas day and you’re looking over the spectacular mountain scenery with your closest friends and family by your side. It’s absolutely magical.
St Anton am Arlberg, is already a picture-perfect mountain town, but at Christmas it’s even more magical with festive activities galore.
Visit the Christmas Market located in the grounds of St Anton’s stunning museum. Peruse the stalls selling traditional goods, see the life sized nativity scene, follow the Christmas adventure trail, sing some carols and eat local delicacies.
Take a sleigh ride through snow-capped forests, wrapped in a fluffy blanket drinking a Glühwein or a hot chocolate. Make this a romantic trip for two, or treat the children to the magical trip of a lifetime.
If it’s action you’re after why not spend your Christmas ice skating, snowshoeing or tobogganing. Wear your novelty jumper and Santa hats for the perfect Christmas picture.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that Christmas is busy on the slopes, however it’s actually one of the quieter weeks of the season. Families tend to ski during the much busier New Year and Half Term periods, so I promise you'll enjoy wide open slopes and short lift queues. Empty slopes also means empty beds, and therefore accommodation is cheaper.
Quieter + cheaper = absolute no brainier.
When it comes to Christmas dinner, you either fall into 2 camps. The ‘Christmas dinner is the most over- rated meal of the year’ camp, or the 'It's not Christmas without roast Turkey' camp.
A ski holiday is a dream come true for those turkey-haters in Camp 1. Instead of forcing down dry turkey, undercooked potatoes and mushy Brussels sprouts, book yourself into a traditional Austrian restaurant and see how the locals do it. There are so many amazing restaurants in St Anton, you will not be disappointed (read about them here)
For camp 2, there are also plenty of options. You could book yourself into a restaurant serving a traditional English roast. In St Anton our favourite restaurant Café Schneider produces the goods on Christmas day.
Hire a private chef to cook an intimate dinner in the comfort of your chalet. This is all the home comforts with none of the work, what a treat!
Do it yourself. If you just love cooking for your family, and cannot trust anyone else with Grandma’s traditional stuffing recipe, open a bottle of wine, put on some Christmas music, and spend the day in your cosy chalet cooking away. Your family will be delighted when they get back from a day on the mountain.
