When it comes to summer holidays with children, St Anton might not be your first choice of locations. Sure the kids love skiing here in the winter… but in the summer?
Well, let me persuade you otherwise.
Toddlers, children and teens of all ages will find lots to see, do and discover in St Anton in the summer months. If you like your children to get outdoors and to try new things in a healthy, active environment, then a summer trip to the mountains could be the answer.
There is just so much more to a mountain holiday than walking. How about swinging through the air on a high ropes course? Or wild swimming in an Alpine lake? Or testing your nerves on a white water raft? Or riding an e-bike to a mountain hut? Or a game of archery? Or following an adventure trail? The options for children, teenagers and their parents in St Anton during the warm summer months are almost limitless.
Whilst the mountains are covered in snow during the winter months, summers in the Alps are reliably warm and sunny, characterised by blue skies and high daytime temperatures of 25°C +. A welcome breeze offers respite to the heat, meaning you feel cooler, and the temperature is perfect for those evening BBQs in the garden. But what is a holiday without a little theatre? You could see the occasional thunderstorm roll through the valley, watering the pastures and clearing the air. Trust me when we say that these are normally very welcome.
Well… If you never try, you’ll never know. Trying new activities as a family can be an excellent way to bond and to create new memories. So forget the hotel kids club, the one hotel restaurant and the beach lined with sun-chairs; you’ve seen all that before! Instead try white water rafting, rock climbing, canyoning, Via Ferrata or paragliding. We promise you will have a great laugh!
We actually think that St Anton is a haven for toddlers. With so many different activities aimed at the younger age groups, your little ones senses will be stimulated so there’s no time for getting bored. So instead of worrying how to keep your little ones entertained along the same stretch of beach and around the same pool for a week, the biggest concern will be how to fit everything in.
We thought you would never ask...! Here is our perfect family holiday itinerary.
Day one should be about discovering your surroundings, and there is only one way to do that. Head up to the top of Valluga, St Anton’s highest peak. Your kids will love the ride on the lifts, the views are stunning and there are some great play-parks to visit along the way.
The Verwall is the jewel in St Anton’s crown. The 10km loop around the stunning Verwallsee lake, offers swimming areas, play-parks, BBQ spots, a high-ropes course, off-road cycling, dramatic views of the Rosanna river and a restaurant thrown in for good measure. You can walk, cycle, e-bike or catch a bus, so no matter the age of your little ones, there really is something for everyone.
White water rafting is an absolute must on your summer Alpine adventure. Located a short drive away, you will float down the river taking in the stunning scenery, tackling rapids and getting more than a little wet! This is an activity for everyone, with children’s’ pirate tours starting for kids aged 5.
E-bikes are the new mountain must-haves and we guarantee and excellent day. If your children are old enough to cycle themselves, you can go on fantastic adventures. Or for the really little ones, hire a trailer and tow them behind you. Head upwards to the alpine huts, or along the valley taking in all the little villages along the way. Whichever way you go, there are ice-cream-stops and dips in the water galore.
One of our favourite adventure trails has to be the ‘Mutspuren’. After taking the Galzigbahn, you will find this glorious trail, leading you to St Anton’s waterpark in the sky; a fantastic play area with water fountains, a small lake, streams and plenty of picnic benches for your lunch. Along the way children will be entertained by the activities that line the route, whilst adults will focus on the stunning views in all directions.
OK, it’s the last day of your holiday and you need a rest from all those activities! Well, we’ve got the answer. This amazing inside and outside pool is child-heaven, with a baby pool, a water slide, whirlpool, waterfalls, a large grass area, ping pong tables, a restaurant and plenty of sun-beds. It’s the perfect spot to sit back and relax.
